However I have recently come across Serviio which is allows your computer to become a media server like AllShare but has the ability to support multiple formats. It works my transcoding the video temporarily into a temporary folder and then streaming the content to the viewer in its preferred format. The software is really easy to use.
The streaming ability is amazing and I am doing it all on wireless. I am streaming to a Samsung Smart LED TV and streaming from a reasonably fast computer (QuadCore). These are the steps I have taken to set it up:
1) Download the software at http://www.serviio.org/ I did this for Windows so literally downloaded and then run the file
2) Open up the programme
3) Turn your device on (that you wish to stream to - in my case the Samsung television)
4) On your computer, look under the 'Status' tab and check your TV or device is listed.
CLICK SAVE AT THE BOTTOM
5) Select the appropriate designation for the device (it did this automatically for mine - otherwise I guess a quick online search would do it)
6) Select the Library - Click the 'Library' tab, then 'Add Local' select your content's location
CLICK SAVE AT THE BOTTOM
7) On the 'Transcoding' tab I selected the number of cores to be used as '4' which may have helped the transcoding process not falter
CLICK SAVE AT THE BOTTOM
8) You have to remember to click save when you change settings in the console - this applies on every tab. So check you have saved the 'Transcoding', 'Library' and 'Status' tabs with all your changes.
9) Try it out. For a Samsung television change the source (don't go into the SMART section). Your computer's name should be showing as an option with the Serviio logo.
It took a while for the library to populate on mine and came up with odd titles at the start, also it said there was an audio codec problem. All of this was just the library populating itself, leave it for a bit and then come back to it later.
- Obviously your computer has to be on for this to work.
- Although the movies are separate files (if you have separate VOB files) the TV automatically plays the next one.

Hey :)
Thanks, this has helped a lot!
Canyou tell me how your "Presentation" tab settings are? I have played around with it a lot now, but cant get a neat "Videos" folder with all the files, but get the "Upper folder" thing and another folder next to it per file..
Thank you :)

Thanks man, Saves me disconnecting HDMI cables and moving my laptop around the house. I'm curious if there is any picture quality degridation streaming compared to a HDMI connection. Very helpful article, Cheers.
